In naher Zukunft wird mehr als die Hälfte der Menschheit digital vernetzt leben, lernen und arbeiten. Schlagworte wie Social Media, mobile, webbasierte Applikationen, Internet der Dinge oder Big Data sind allgegenwärtig und beschreiben dieses Phänomen in vielen verschiedenen Dimensionen. Die Menge an Daten und Informationen, die unsere Vorfahren vor mehr als einhundert Jahren über den gesamten Lebenszyklus erreichte, überflutet heute digital vernetzte Menschen an einem einzigen Tag. Die digitale Transformation betrifft oder wird künftig alle Bereiche des Lebens und Arbeitens betreffen (Jung/Kraft 2016). Ebenso sind alle Wirtschaftsbranchen von dem laufenden Transformationsprozess erfasst; einige Branchen bereits stärker, wie beispielsweise der Handel oder die Medienindustrie, andere Branchen sind noch weiter entfernt (Bradley et al 2015).
