Der Leitsatz des Instituts lautet "Leichtbaulösungen aus einer Hand" und umfasst die gesamte Entwicklungskette: Werkstoff, Konstruktion, Simulation, Fertigung, Bauteil sowie Qualitätssicherung. Ein Hauptforschungsgebiet sind neuartige Bauweisen mit hohem Leichtbaupotential, wobei textilverstärkte Verbundwerkstoffe, Hybridverbunde oder Metall-Matrix-Verbunde Anwendung finden. 170 Mitarbeiter aus den Disziplinen Maschinenbau, Werkstoffwissenschaften, Elektrotechnik, Bauingenieurwesen, Technomathematik und Physik sorgen für den stetigen Innovationsschub, wobei sie auf modernste Anlagen und Prüflaboratorien zurückgreifen können.
Eine besondere Auszeichnung für das ILK war 2006 die Eröffnung des universitären Forschungszentrums "Lightweight Structures and Materials" von Rolls-Royce am Dresdner Institut.
Das Institut für Leichtbau und Kunststofftechnik (ILK) der Technischen Universität Dresden präsentiert sich vom 1. bis 3. April 2008 am Gemeinschaftsstand des Freistaates Sachsen (Halle 1 Stand G 16) auf der JEC Composites Show in Paris.
