Während Magnetplatten ausschließlich für magnetisierbare Werkstoffe wie Eisen, Kobalt, Nickel eingesetzt wurden, findet die Vakuumspanntechnik für eine wesentlich größere Auswahl an Materialien Verwendung. Jedoch müssen die zu spannenden Werkstücke gewisse Kriterien wie z.B. relativ große Auflagefläche, Oberflächenbeschaffenheit, Dünnwandigkeit etc., erfüllen.
Magnetspannplatten bieten höhere Haltekräfte; die Vakuumspanntechnik erfordert zusätzlich betriebene Vakuumerzeuger (Vakuumpumpe oder Ejektor).
