Von den 2,4 Milliarden Euro Nettovermögen zum einen Ende des Jahres will der Ryanair-Chef eine Sonderdividende ausschütten oder Aktien zurückkaufen. Zum anderen werde ein Großteil des Geldes für neue umweltfreundliche Flugzeuge – und „zur Abschreckung“ gebraucht. Der Deutschen Lufthansa und anderen Hochpreiskonkurrenten solle, so der Unternehmenschef, gezeigt werden, „dass wir in einem Preiskampf den längeren Atem haben“. ´
Nach der geplanten Übernahme der irischen Aer Lingus will O’Leary diese Linie umbauen, erklärte er der WirtschaftsWoche: „Dann arbeitet sie so profitabel wie wir.“ Einen Einstieg ins Billigfluggeschäft auf der Langstrecke wird es aber auch mit Aer Lingus, die in die USA fliegt, nicht geben. O`Leary: „Unser Geschäftsmodell funktioniert im Interkontinentalverkehr nicht. Aber wir werden die Routen beibehalten, wenn sie sich rechnen.“
Außerdem weist O’Leary in dem WirtschaftsWoche-Gespräch in der aktuellen Klimadebatte Vorwürfe gegen die Flugbranche zurück: „Wir sind weder Grund noch Lösung. Nicht nur Straßenverkehr und Kraftwerke, auch Schiffe produzieren doppelt so viel Kohlendioxid wie wir. Wir werden doch nur geprügelt, weil sich deutsche Politiker nicht trauen, der Autoindustrie ihre dicken Geländewagen zu verbieten“, sagte er. Das Wachstum von Ryanair sieht er durch die aktuelle Diskussion nicht gefährdet.
